The biotech fashion industry is heating up, with organizations of all sizes and resources working on exciting, innovative materials. So which are we keeping an eye on right now? Here are six that stand out to us based on their scope, brand deals, or recent developments.

1. Spiber

What does Spiber make?

Spiber uses a proprietary fermentation process to create Brewed Protein™, a biomaterial made from plant sugars and microbes that mimics spider silk and other natural fibers. This approach creates high-performance textiles without relying on traditional silk production.

Who are they partnering with?

Spiber has partnered with brands including The North Face, sacai, Pangaia, Woolrich, Ron Herman, and Goldwin to bring sustainable materials to market across outdoor and luxury fashion segments.

Can I buy anything from them?

Issey Miyake’s IM MEN line includes items made from Brewed Protein™, and Helly Hansen’s Spring/Summer release features two Brewed Protein™ products. New Zealand sustainable fashion company Untouched World will include Spiber’s Brewed Protein™ in its Spring Summer 2026 collection.

2. Keel Labs

What does Keel Labs make?

Keel Labs creates Kelsun™, a sustainable fiber made from seaweed that serves as an alternative to cotton and polyester. This ocean-based biomaterial offers a renewable approach to textile production while using marine resources.

They received backing from the H&M Foundation through the Global Change Award and now work with the likes of Stella McCartney and sustainable fashion brand Outerknown.

Keel Labs has raised more than $17 million and has gained recognition for using ocean-based resources and earned sustainability innovation awards.

3. Colorifix

What does Colorifix make?

Colorifix uses engineered microbes to produce and fix pigments onto fabrics, eliminating toxic dyes and reducing water usage in textile dyeing processes. This biotechnology approach addresses one of fashion’s most polluting processes.

What do we know about their funding?

As of 2025 Colorifix raised $18 million in Series B2 funding, led by Inter IKEA Group with continued support from H&M Group Ventures.

Who are they partnering with?

Major fashion brands like H&M, PANGAIA, and performance wear company Vollebak have adopted Colorifix’s sustainable dyeing technology in their production processes.

H&M Conscious collections and Vollebak performance wear lines have featured Colorifix dyes, making the technology accessible to consumers.

The company has proven their dying technology cuts water usage, chemical usage, and energy requirements at industrial scale, securing major funding from retail giants and demonstrating commercial viability.

4. Modern Meadow

What does Modern Meadow make?

Modern Meadow uses their proprietary Innovera™(formerly Bio-Vera) material to create leather alternatives that replace both plastic and animal-based options. Their bio-based approach creates materials that integrate with existing manufacturing processes.

The company has collaborations or development partnerships with brands, including Tory Burch and Everlane, focusing on sustainable goods.

5. AMSilk

What does AMSilk make?

AMSilk produces Biosteel®, a synthetic silk biopolymer that combines strength and lightweight properties while remaining biodegradable. This bio-engineered material has a significantly lower environmental footprint than traditional silk production.

They’ve partnered with major brands like Adidas and luxury watchmaker Omega to develop applications for Biosteel® across fashion and accessories.
